Gastroenterology is an area of medicine that focuses the diseases of stomach, oesophagus, small intestine, colon, rectum, bile ducts, liver, pancreas and gall bladder. The functioning of the entire digestive system is related to food passage through the digestive canal, processes of food digestion, absorption and also elimination. It also focuses on the health of the digestive system and gastrointestinal tract. They can treat everything from irritable bowel syndrome to hepatitis C.

It includes the medical and surgical treatment of diseases such as gastrointestinal cancer, jaundice, colon polyps, cirrhosis of the liver, heartburn, peptic ulcer disease, colitis, gallbladder and biliary tract disease, irritable bowel syndrome, pancreatitis and nutritional problems.

Barium swallow / enema:

Barium is a liquid that highlights areas inside your body through a scan. The doctor may give you barium to drink, to check your oesophagus, stomach, upper small intestine, colon and rectum.

Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a narrow, flexible lighted tubes with video cameras to visualize inside the intestinal tract. You may get an endoscopy if you have belly pain, vomiting, persistent heartburn or any other problems that don’t go away.

Colonoscopy

Here the doctor puts a thin scope with a camera, it goes into your colon, rectum and large intestine to look for polyps or bleeding, get rid of any polyps or take a biopsy. Colonoscopy is used to check the problems such as inflammatory bowel disease and problems that may cause changes in how often and how you poop, belly pain, or blood in your stool.

Enteroscopy

You swallow a tiny video capsule that transmits pictures of the insides of your digestive tract. An enteroscopy may reveal causes of bleeding and ulcers caused by Crohn’s disease.
