Paediatrics

Paediatrics is a Greek word pais means child and iatros means doctor or healer, thus known as healer of children. Paediatrics deals with the medical and health care of infants, children, and adolescents from birth to the age of 18. The care of paediatric patients is different to that of adults.

What does a paediatrician do?

A paediatrician provides medical care for children who are ill and also provide preventive health services for healthy children. A paediatrician manages different condition of children such as physical, mental and emotional at every stage of development in sickness and health.

Aims of paediatrics

The aims of paediatrics are to reduce infant, child rate of deaths, promote healthy lifestyles control the spread of infectious disease and help to ease the problems of children and adolescents with chronic conditions. Paediatricians diagnose and treat conditions of children such as injuries, infections, cancers, genetic and congenital conditions, organ diseases and dysfunctions.

Neonatology

PaeNeonatology is a subspecialty of paediatrics which consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill or premature newborns. It is a hospital-based specialty, and is usually practised in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). The principal patients of neonatologists are newborn. Neonatologists are doctors who specialize in the care of newborn children. Newborns can present a unique set of health challenges that require a high level of skill and medical expertise to treat. This is particularly true for premature newborns and those with underdeveloped organs.

Neonatologists play an important role in more routine aspects of care, like counseling parents before, during and also after childbirth. Their training helps the parents to for everyday aspects of caring for newborns.

What Does a Neonatologist Do?

Although most children are born without problems, neonatologists are the first line of support in a high-risk birth. Complications that might require neonatologists help:

  • Respiratory or digestive systems that aren’t fully developed
  • Premature labor
  • Lack of oxygen (perinatal asphyxia)

Neonatologists are first and foremost pediatricians who are responsible for the medical care of children. When something goes wrong, neonatologists are there to coordinate with other healthcare professionals to provide your baby the proper care.
